Volume 9
I promise, this blog will NOT be all about Women’s History Month or International Women's Day. Even though we are amazing, resourceful, strong, loving, nurturing, Superwomen. I mean, I need to talk about food too, right? 😆
So what else is going on in March you ask? Well it’s also National Nutrition Month and I will be sharing some tips, nutritional information and healthy(ish) recipes. Then we have Daylight Savings on March 13th HALLELUJAH! I’ll stop being confused about what time it is because it will stop getting dark outside at 4pm 👏🏽, Pi Day (March 14th), St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th), Common Courtesy Day (March 21st) and Chip and Dip Day (March 23rd) to name a few.
Women’s History Month honors, acknowledges and celebrates the vital role that we have played throughout history because, as I said earlier, we are powerful, intelligent, resourceful, amazing and magical. P.E.R.I.O.D.

Women's History Month
This month is dedicated to reflect on the often overlooked contributions that women have made throughout history. It grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978[1].
This year’s theme is “Women Who Tell Our Stories''. The
National Women's History Alliance will “encourage recognition of women, past and present, who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling including print, radio, TV, stage, screen, blogs, podcasts, and more. The timely theme honors women in every community who have devoted their lives and talents to producing art, pursuing truth, and reflecting the human condition decade after decade.”
National Nutrition Month
Is an annual event that was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 1973 to help people make informed food choices and create healthier eating habits.
This year’s theme is “Fuel For The Future” which translates to eating more sustainably and protecting the environment. Adding more plant based food into your diet is one way of achieving that. Did you know that the number of vegan consumers has gone up from 1% of the US population in 2014, to 6% as of 2022?
And 39% of the population who aren’t vegan are adding more fruits, vegetables and plant based products into their diets.
Who is leading this steady increase in vegan popularity? A recent 2018 survey shows that nearly 40% of millennials identify as vegan. Baby Boomers and Generation X tie at 21% each, with only 2% of seniors labeling themselves vegan.
And guys, there are
WAAAAAAYYYYY better options to choose from in this day and age. I’ve done quite a few catering events where the client wanted a vegan option, and you really, honestly cannot taste that much of a difference. Of course it’s not going to taste like real beef or chicken but it doesn’t taste like cardboard either.
Here are a few options you can try out:
● Plant Based Ground Beef Substitute
● Beyond Meat Plant Based Jerky
And a couple of vegan cookbooks to get you started:
Cooking Tips I Have Learned Over The Years
I have been cooking for a long, LOOOOOONG time. So long that people will come up to me to rave about something I cooked for them decades ago and I don’t even remember cooking for them, let alone what I made. 🤣🤣
● If you are cooking for any kind of event (birthday party, dinner party, Thanksgiving etc.) IT IS OKAY NOT TO MAKE EVERY SINGLE DISH YOURSELF. Why kill yourself? Costco has EXCELLENT frozen appetizers and desserts to choose from, and don’t get me started on that addiction inducing roast chicken! My point is cook one or two dishes yourself and buy the rest. Save yourself the headache.
● It is Murphy’s Law that the first pancake or omelet you make is going to be horrible. Just know the second one will be one hundred times better.
● This one is from Rachel Ray but it is oh so helpful. Have a bowl or container on the counter where you are chopping and peeling to throw the scraps into. Going back and forth to the garbage can is inefficient and time consuming. Basic? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely.
● If you mistakenly oversalt a soup or stew that you’re making, add a splash of either plain vinegar, white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar or rice wine vinegar. It balances out the salt.
● Buy pre-peeled garlic. Yes, I said it.
Pi(e) Day - March 14th
Pi Day is celebrated annually on March 14th by math enthusiasts and pie lovers alike. This day is dedicated to celebrating the mathematical constant π (pi), which is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Pi has been studied by mathematicians for thousands of years and is used in various fields like physics, engineering, and even music. Sounds important but I have to be honest … math and I are not friends. I had to take remedial math in college smh.
One of the most popular ways to celebrate Pi Day (and what I’m most interested in!) is by baking and eating pies. Many people bake pies in the shape of the pi symbol, while others create pies with mathematical designs or punny names like "apple pi" or "cherry pi(e)". Some bakeries even offer discounts on pi-related treats on this day.
Here’s some websites that either have AWESOME pie recipes or MAKE awesome pies:

St. Patrick’s Day - March 17th
This year marks the return of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York! The parade starts at 11AM on 44th Street, going up Fifth Avenue, past St. Patrick’s cathedral and ends about 5pm at the American Irish Historical Society at East 80th Street. Now if you’re interested in a way that doesn’t include drinking, here are some suggestions lol:
● Comedy
I will also be offering good ole’ Corned Beef and Cabbage on my Shef site! And if you are a new customer, please use my referral code sheftresia724 to get $15 off of your first TWO orders.
Chips and Dip Day - March 23rd
This honestly is one of my favorite things to eat. I’m more of a snacker so if you give me either a charcuterie board or chips and dip, I’m a happy camper all day long. There are HUNDREDS of dip recipes, but these are some of my favorites:
● Dill Dip
Mom and Pop Small Business Day - March 29th
Mom and Pop stores have been an essential part of communities for decades, providing a more personalized and unique shopping experience. In recent years, with the rise of big-box retailers and online marketplaces, it's easy to overlook the importance of these small businesses. However, in 2023 and beyond, the need for these stores has become even more important.
One of the significant advantages of Mom and Pop stores is their ability to provide a personalized shopping experience. These stores often have a better understanding of their customers' needs and preferences, which allows them to tailor their products and services accordingly. This personalized approach can be especially valuable in today's world, where consumers are looking for more meaningful and authentic connections with the businesses they support.
In 2023 and beyond, it's more important than ever to support Mom and Pop stores. These small businesses have faced many challenges in recent years, from competition with big-box retailers to the impact of the pandemic. By supporting these stores, you are not only helping to keep them in business, but you are also helping to preserve the unique character and identity of your community.
